Unclassifiable Weirdness

These films may fit in other categories too, but they also go here for just being so bizarre. The film medium, like no other, can blend images and sound into the closest thing to recorded reality we have. For these filmmakers, the world they depict takes on surreal dreams, left-field stories, mind-blowing craziness, and psychedelic fits.

David Lynch calls it "catching the big fish": saying all you can possibly say at once, going for the biggest ideas, and letting the audience figure it out on their own as best they can. Alejandro Jodorowsky values individualism so much that he believes "To the extent that we try to be like others, we convert ourselves into zombies." Terry Gilliam says that filmmaking is "about expanding how you see the world." Heck, even musician Frank Zappa (peace be upon his name) said "Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible."
