stone is about mila jovovich being an alien and then there are some bee sounds. The cornfield where jack lives is relative to the cornrows found on edward nortons head. The overall message is don't throw children out the window or set your dead grandma on fire if her leg has been chopped off
.
This film is meditation of self-identity, whether it's centered or listlessness; powerful or weak. The soul knowing itself with peace or does the static of booze, dogma, vices drown the souls recognition of its place and power. Using a vehicle of the quiet sound that awakens God within, mostly insect wings, the four characters are lost and found. So subtle and unknowable this screenplay, like the self perhaps. If your into a gripping subtle flick, Stone may be for you.
This film was about being aware in your life. There are moments in life in which we have to make a decision which in turn effects the rest of our lives. From leaving someone or staying with them. From having sex with someone or abstaining. From killing someone or walking away. We might think the course we choose will some how grind itself out. That we have an eternity. But, we don't, they say the sky goes forever. But, maybe we don't have a telescope to see its end. This movie left me with more questions than having a feeling of closure.
Why did she burn down the gd house? "because its as good a story as any"? What in the hell is that supposed to mean?
I think the movie was amazing. It makes open your eyes to everything going on around you. It's about the turning point in everyone's life. How we make decisions that influence our life and those around us, as well as, those who we may affect unintentionally.
At the beginning of Stone, you're introduced to two characters seemingly at opposite ends of the moral scale: A convicted criminal and a lawful officer. At the end of Stone, those two characters will have switched position. But you'll learn, that they both really just moved forward thru their cycles. A main character is given the lines: "Did you know you started out as a stone? Your soul...had to work your way up to being a human...paying off debts...past sins for past lives". The criminal, tellingly named Stone, has payed off his debts, has accepted his sinful nature and is moving forward ("reborned" as he jokes) in a new cycle. The officer, having clung to a morale he doesn't believe in, "wearing his righteousnesses as filthy rags", not realizing his failure as a husband, will have lost everything. In the final scene though, we see a glimpse of hope for him, as he begins listening.
Great film, very few can capture the point like this one. The point being the awakening of your inner god-like potential regardless of the life situation you are in...that same potential that exists in every human being and is brought about by the realisation of the treasure that each of us holds inside - Awareness/Soul.
The real question is, is Edward Norton's wife from another planet? In the early scenes Edward Norton suggests that his wife is an alien. Later on, bright lights and sounds of vibration could be interpreted as an alien spaceship landing. The end of the movie leaves this point unresolved, and we can only guess whether or not Edward Norton is also an extraterrestrial or if they are having alien hybrid children.
To answer the "who burned the house down" question... They don't directly say how the fire started, leading you to think either his wife did it herself, or Ed Norton's character did it and she came up with the lie for the cops, as to not expose the affair and it's consequences.
My personal view seems to be the obvious one, that his wife did it and divorced him, while 'Stone' was peaceful as he had claimed, and had found his faith.
For me, the wife in deed burned down the house. The scene of her in bed, holding the family album when De Niro runs in to get her during the fire, shows she wanted to protect somehting of value. Then, the scene switched to her looking at the album with her daughter. Outside the house, she claimed that "no one did it", blaming it on faulty wiring that the movie never previously alluded to.
Not all prisons are made of bricks and razor wire. Some exist solely in the mind as we battle with the good and evil forces of this world. (Deniro)
The fire scenes act as a significant metaphor for destroying the old to make room for the new. Fire in nature is an important part of the life cycle and allows for new growth.
Complete destruction leaves room to start fresh and should be seen as an opportunity for growth rather than a mis fortune placed on you by God.
Also I believe the movie has an underlying message that God speaks to everyone through different methods. At the end when Edward Norton speaks to the radio host, his definition of spirituality is passed off as foolish and skewed, when in his reality that buzzing sound he heard in his head triggered profound spiritual change.
