It is about a man who has lived life merely going though the motions; never feeling anything due to medication. When he meets an amazing girl; his entire outlook is changed and he realizes that life is just about being in the moment and loving what you have. To him, Sam is just that. This revelation is also due to him leaving his medications in L.A when he comes home, but the meaning lies in Samantha.
The movie has many meanings.
Zach Braff is trying to say that if you are really depressed and sad, you don't need medication that the doctor prescribes to you. You just need to find love in a sweet girl.
Another meaning is to highlight how unsafe a house can be, and the snowball affect of little things that happen around the house. the accident with his Mum caused a chain reaction that affects him for the rest of his life. And heaps of other people.
It also has the meaning of how you will meet the right person in the weirdest place. You don't meet them at cool "clubs", you will meet her at the doctor or somewhere cool. The weirdest things can unify people. Like music and the shins.
The meaning of Garden State:
Stop procrastinating your life and start living.
Garden State is the story of someone fully experiencing life for the first time. Garden State tells us to smell the roses and experience life for the moment. It tells us to stop making plans and enjoy life now.
This message is told through a love story (protagonist experiences one of the greater joys of life). We are reminded to enjoy life and stop focusing on future plans by being reminded that it could all be taken from us so easily. As the protagonist's mother slipped, became crippled and much of his life has been determined by "a stupid latch."
In every movie the ending says it all. It makes sense for him to go back to LA, "get his life together." Back to his old life. But he chooses his new life and new found relationship over the path that makes the most sense. Thus, living in the now.
