The movie is about Fate. Fate binds two people together, and no matter how hard they struggle against it, they will never fully overcome it.
Even after erasing each other from their memories, they still meet each other again. Then, even after getting the tapes in the mail and knowing how unhappy they were at the end of the erased relationship, they STILL choose to be together.
Sometimes two people are meant for each other, and Fate will always bring them together.
being that i have seen this movie in the high 100"s i can say most are statements are correct but the abortion one is way off..to me, now the movie its self is a love story, based on everyones thought that if you take someone out of your mind then you will no longet think of them, and be able to move on. Now for anyone that has ever been in love can atest that is not correct. even if you forget everything about someone, it is also your heart that must forget as well. Like the little lady sitting in the waiting room.. she wanted to forget her dog, becuz it hurt her to think of him. sad thing is she didnt realize her heart was attatched as well. so the point to the movie is that you can forget all you want but until you let them out of your heart and mind together. there is always going to be a conflict of where you want to go, and usually the heart wins.
i think that this movie teaches you that you can't run away from your problems, even if you go as far as erasing them, you will always have to deal with them sooner or later. you can't run away. and that destiny is something that you can't run away from. it's what's going to happen. this movie taught me a lot.
I agree pretty much with all the interpretations about learning from mistakes, take the bad with the good, etc., and also I think it has to do with actually communication between people in relationships. They really have a better chance when they got back together at the end at making it work out because they've heard from the tapes what the other person really thought of him or her, which could be just misunderstandings that can be straightened out. They can also realize what they each did wrong to make the other feel that way, and, if they really love each other, will be willing to make some changes.
Being the optimist that I am, I thought the end of the movie definitely resulted in the two staying together despite the fact that the tapes clearly showed they ended up despising each other. It showed that no relationship is ever going to have a perfect, fairy tale ending and that it is all about sacrifice and compromise. Also, being that truthful about everything in a relationship can help it survive. For instance, when Joel was calling Clementine a whore in the tape, she commented on how she isn't one, and the issue seemed to clear up. Obviously there is an extent as to what should be said to your significant other and what should just be a mere thought.
Besides the end, during the erasing of his memories, I feel like there were numerous times in his life when his memory was being erased. I came to this conclusion when her hair color constantly changed, from green to pink to orange to the final color, blue, where they actually found out about the tapes from Mary. In other words, the eraser of both of their memories along with their re-meeting occurred numerous times. The same probably happened with Mary and the doctor, and it was all put to an end when Mary found out that her memory had been erased.
Also, another emotional aspect of this movie was when Clementine (in the present with the blue hair) called her boyfriend (the helper) crying and complaining that she felt she was disappearing and that there was something wrong with her. This showed to me that two people in love are emotionally connected. They get the side effects of the others grief and happiness.
Definitely watching this movie again in due time.
this movie is a poetry...about love, about mistakes, about the normal human tendency to get irritated by someone who's close to us, and about how hard we try to forget him/her, fate always brings two lovers together. The movie is open, it doesn't conclude and that's the best part of it....it asks us whether these two people should be together???....... This movie creates a sense of weirdness in love.
I have always had an off the wall interpretation of the movie. Movies where the scenerio is as this one, it leaves the impression of a state of perpetual occurrences. When they continue to keep trying and making and breaking their experiences throughout their relationship, they're living in a perpetual loop. In the movie there are several ” patients” who wish to repeat the procedure. As they continue to repeat their mistakes I believe they try to repeat the ” remedy”. I believe that as long as they are involved they will constantly relive that trauma. Chances are they will seek more avidly the treatment as they are now aware that they can and have. It will always go back to ” THIS is why I erased you.”
