This movie just shows us that we should protect the environment. Most of us think of the future as a cool, amazing place but in this movie it shows that the earth is all brown and destroyed. And now the planet of the Navi's is the next victim for humans. Protect the environment and be Earth friendly!
This movie isn't very heavy as far as a deep meaning, it's mostly good for it's visuals, but what I took as the main idea of this movie is that imperialism is bad. Think about it, the human's imperialization of the natives (Na'vi I think they were called?) is very much like imperialization in our own history, such as trying to get the natives to adapt to our culture by learning our language and the humans using their resources.
This movie is trying to highlight what we are doing here on earth. We have forgotten that "we belong to the earth NOT that the earth belongs to us" and this movie is a perfect example of that. When they talk about how "the planet where the people come from is brown with no green" they are referring to earth and the destruction we as humans are doing with our greed. Thick about it. We dump everything in landfills, pollute the air, are irresponsible with living a disposable lifestyle....we will one day end up like the humans on avatar. In search of another place to live because we destroyed the earth. It makes me sad that people don't see the parallels of this movie with our planet earth.
People are missing the meaning of the movie.
Of course, we loose touch with our mother earth, basic meaning of the movie.
But it also shows a common characteristic of us, how we want to conquer everything, how we don't know how to accept other beliefs and act completely selfish on other cultures, religions, races, etc...
It shows that once you're on the other side, and see it through their eyes (metaphorically) you learn about them, learn to understand and finally accept them.
It mirrors the thousands of wars fought in our existence. Wars started by cultural differences, minerals, etc...
How we'd do anything to achieve what we want to, without having any respect for the other, the selfishness of the human being throughout history reflected in one big blockbuster movie.
Guess most people were just there for the 3D and special effects...
Watch this movie with the original colonization of America in mind. The humans being the British with their guns ships and technology and the natives being the American Indians. This may not be the purpose or meaning of the movie but there are a lot of uncanny similarities.
The film is partially about the environment, but its also criticism of the war in the Middle East. The humans go after "unobtainium" (yes, I too laughed at such a stupid name for an element) which is not only all over the planet but the largest cache is directly beneath the Home Tree of the Na'vi. When the company desires more and more, they seek first a peaceful solution, but feel they lost that advantage. Using force, the humans destroy the tree and seek to wipe out the Na'vi. Cameron is criticizing the tactics of the US war machine and its goal of oil control.
The movie is about how we are POLUTING the earth. Later on in the Future, We will be looking for a NEW planet to live on JUST BEACAUSE we poluted the earth!! Who knows if we will find a new one...

When he goes into the other world - the voice over talks about energy running through us - this is what shamans believe in - I think the film was about going back to our roots - finding happiness by living simpler lives by connecting with nature - as this is how we are supposed to live - we are now so disconnected with the earth - and it affects us badly - we do things that are unnatural for human beings and we suffer badly - we would have less problems and suffer less if we connected with nature and lived more simpler lives - how nature intended us to do so.
Obviously this movie is about environment and the freedom of living organisms, but I see so much more going on here. First off I want to point out that Jakes character is similar to say Jaguar Paw's from Apocalypto. He wakes up, he runs from a black cat like creature, faces death, is blue or gets painted blue, hides in a tree, jumps in a river and overcomes the enemy. The big difference is that in one the foreigners arrive and in Avatar the invaders leave. Looking at it that way the movie appears to be highlighting the destiny of an important person that will change a world, in this case Pandora. Also notice that Avatar like so many of these wake up movies as I call them because of the distinctive wake up scene has twins; Jake replaces his twin brother. The scene where Jake is surrounded by the pure spirits or the flying seeds is symbolic of Ewa choosing him as a type of Messiah for that planet and all life on it. Notice how he has the down arrow painted on his forehead which is symbolic for reception known in Kabbalah circles. It appears he is the receiver that can talk to Ewa and even tame one of it's most powerful predators using this receptive ability. Following the Kabbalah thread you will notice that connection becomes a key part of his spiritual journey as he has to physically connect to creatures using his hair tentacle thingy. As he connects to creatures he seems to have a mini orgasm and even Dr Grace tells him not to play with it or he will go blind. It appears that the movie refers to this non sexual organ to be a form of connection that is used to establish a bond. It may be that the creators where hinting towards sex being a form of spiritual connection, but that is purely speculative. The tree of souls seems to be a reference to the tree of life, but again I may be stretching since it's not an exact parallel. The very name Avatar when looked at through the eyes of Hinduism is a kind of reference to an Avatar of Vishnu which so happens to be a blue being that sends an avatar to a world to bring righteousness, back to the social and cosmic order. The movie Avatar seems to fit that description well. Now look at it from a Sumerian Annunaki perspective where giant beings came to our planet and mined earth for precious metals. Only in Avatar the Navi are the super strong giants and we are the invaders mining the planet for unabtanium. Taking that Sumerian view further makes Turuk Maktao a very interesting creature as it is a large red dragon that is the symbol of Marduk and the same creature that Gregory the great's statue is standing on in the Vatican. Marduk's goal was to free humanity and embrace Earth's natural treasures. The allegory is deep and speaks volumes to me probably just because of what I know.
